SOMC Housing – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

🔹 General Program Info

What is SOMC Housing?
State of Mind Collective (SOMC) Housing provides shared, all-inclusive housing for young adults (ages 18–24) in Chicago who are experiencing homelessness or housing instability. We operate as a private landlord, not a licensed housing provider or transitional housing program.

Who is eligible?
Young adults must:

  • Be 18–24 years old

  • Be experiencing housing instability or homelessness

  • Be willing to live in a shared, substance-free home

  • Be able to sign and follow a month-to-month lease agreement

What’s included in the rent?

  • Fully furnished private or shared room

  • All utilities (electric, gas, water, trash)

  • High-speed internet and streaming access

  • Basic linens

  • On-site laundry or access to nearby facilities

Where are the homes located?
Our properties are in safe, transit-accessible neighborhoods in the City of Chicago. Exact addresses are shared with approved applicants and referring agencies.

Is SOMC a transitional housing program?
No. SOMC is not licensed or structured as a transitional or supportive housing program. We do not provide on-site services, supervision, or treatment. Residents live independently under standard lease agreements.

🔹 Referrals & Move-In

How can a young adult apply for housing?
Referrals can be submitted by agency partners or directly by individuals using our referral form.

Can youth apply directly, without an agency?
Yes. While many of our residents are referred through social service agencies, we accept direct inquiries from eligible young adults.

What is the lease structure?
We use a simple month-to-month rental agreement. There is no long-term commitment, and residents may leave at any time with notice.

What is the cost of rent?
We offer both private and shared room options. Final pricing is discussed directly with referring agencies or the applicant during the intake process, based on room availability and funding source.

What if someone doesn’t have a job or income?
We work with social service agencies who may sponsor rent through programs such as RRH, ESG, DCFS, or flex funds. We cannot currently accept housing vouchers.

🔹 Rules & Expectations

Is this a supervised or staffed living environment?
No. SOMC Housing is an independent-living setting. There is no on-site staff. Residents are responsible for managing their own schedule and space, similar to any standard rental.

Are there house rules?
Yes. Residents must:

  • Respect a substance-free living environment

  • Follow shared space etiquette (quiet hours, cleanliness)

  • Respect roommates and property

  • Follow their rental agreement

Can a resident be evicted?
Yes. Residents who violate their lease agreement or house rules may be subject to lease termination. However, we aim to work constructively with partners to avoid displacement whenever possible.

Are services like case management or therapy included?
No. SOMC does not provide services. If a resident has a case manager, we welcome their involvement, but SOMC does not offer on-site programs or treatment.
